Sometime during this current decade, the Black barbershop will celebrate 200 years as a staple of African American institutions and culture. William T. Johnson (1809 – June 17, 1851), was born into slavery, emancipated in 1820, and became a barbershop owner in 1830, after years as an apprentice under his brother-in-law. He is recognized as the first professional Black barbershop owner in American history.
Maintaining the now centuries-old heritage of Black barbering, Cincinnati’s Cuts Plus Barber Shop, located at 1000 East McMillan Street, combines the latest techniques, amenities, and services of the trade, with the traditional welcoming atmosphere that invites men of color to exchange personal insights, opinions, experiences, and the camaraderie of racial kinship.
“Trust the universe and respect your hair,” is a famous quote by Bob Marley. With over 20 years of expertise, the professionals at Cuts Plus are the ideal caretakers of your locks, providing Cuts & Trims, Hair Cleansing, Shaves & Facials, as well as Nail Care for both women and men, at pandemic-friendly prices, by appointment or walk-in.
Cuts Plus Barber Shop is the equivalent of the Village Square, the great cultural equalizer, where African American men from all walks of life coalesce and reacquaint themselves with what they all have in common, coming away looking better individually, and feeling better about each other. They offer (limited) free cuts to returning school students in the fall. Visit them at https://cutsplusbarbershop.com/ or call them today, 513-961-4491.
